I'm not actually sure when I planted out the courgettes, but here they are on 2nd May.

The broad beans went in on 6th May, and I sowed beetroot & lettuce seeds then too.

There was a frost on the night of 5th/6th, which damaged two of the courgette plants. You can see the water sprinkler that I've bought (delivered - I'm not going anywhere!)

So that evening I took some anti-frost measures - using cardboard, parcel tape & stones to make a nice 'tea cosies' for the eight plants - I added two from the back-ups; I didn't think the frost damage was bad enough to throw out the damaged pair (highlighted in white).

And the next morning, most of the cosies were still in place ;-)

There was another frost the following week and unfortunately one of the cosies fell over - the plant underneath was very affected - so I replaced it.

We have had two periods of frosty nights - one on 5th/6th May, which got two of the courgettes (see above ) and damaged a couple of the runner beans. I replaced the beans with back ups, but took them back to the greenhouse to have some TLC.

But then on around 13th/14th May, there was another, harder frost - it affected just one of the courgettes, a couple of the main crop potatoe plants, but also eight of the 24 runner beans :-(
So I used four the back ups, planted in between damaged ones.

Then as another frost was forecast, I wrapped up the beans to keep them cosy!(14th May)

Old patch
In late April, I heard the harsh buzz of a chain saw - someone was busy in the garden below mine. Hooray - the evil leylandii were having the top 10 feet chopped off, allowing sunlight to reach the weed fest of the old veg patch. SO I got to work, clearing and digging over part of it.
To be continued...
OK - more soon!
