The New Vegetable Patch

Friday 10th January

As the evil Leylandii are totally blocking any vestige of sunlight from the old vegetable patch at the bottom of the garden, I thought it was about time to start a New Vegetable Patch!!

I began last Sunday; step one was to mow a patch of the orchard, about 8 yards square. Then I started cutting out the turf - this is the result after one..

& after five more, it was time to stop for the day.

By Wednesday I was feeling the urge to cut turf again, and the veg patch grew a satisfying amount...

I did a bit more today, and now have a patch eight yards by one. It is not too hard cutting the turf - the hard bit is then moving the turf up to the garden where the chickens live. I can only manage 3 pieces at a time in the wheelbarrow, so I trudge up & plonk the turfs down & water them, in the faint hope that they might actually start to grow. If nothing else, it is adding about 3 inches to the soil there, and as the soil thickness is about an inch, that is very welcome.

To be continued...
